Habit streaks, answered
How long does it really take to build a habit?
The famous "21 days" figure is a myth that grew out of a 1960s plastic surgeon's observation. The most-cited real study (Lally et al., 2009, University College London) found habits took anywhere from 18 to 254 days to become automatic, with an average of about 66 days. The honest answer: it depends on the habit and the person — which is why tracking your actual streak beats trusting a magic number.
Does missing one day ruin a habit streak?
Not according to the research — the same UCL study found that missing a single day made no measurable difference to long-term habit formation. What kills habits is missing twice in a row and letting the miss become the new pattern. Never miss twice is a better rule than never miss.
How do I keep a streak going?
Make the habit small enough that a bad day can't stop it, anchor it to something you already do, and make the streak visible — seeing a number you don't want to reset is a surprisingly strong motivator. That last part is exactly what a habit tracker like DailyPulse does: streaks, reminders, and a heatmap of your history.
